The new Mayor and Deputy Mayor were welcomed into office at the official Mayor Choosing ceremony in the Council Chamber on Monday 17 May 2010.
Councillor Yvonne Watson was re-elected for a second term as the new Mayor and Councillor Joan Tanner was re-elected for a second term as the new Deputy Mayor.
This was followed by the traditional Hext Church Service at the Parish Church. Richard Hext was the first Mayor of St Ives in 1639.
In the afternoon the children of the town were invited to drink from the Loving Cup and receive a saffron bun. The cup was presented to the town in 1640 by Sir Francis Bassett of Tehidy. The inscription on the base reads “iff any discord twist my friends arise within the burrough of beloved st Ives itt is desired that this my cupp of loue to eurie one a peace maker may proue then am i blessed to have giuen a legacie si loke my hart unto posteritie”.
