COAST AWARD 2010

There have been three local wins in a national competition organized by Coast magazine.  St Ives won the category for Best Family Holiday Destination.  Judges took into account the fact that St Ives is a year round destination with a vibrant arts scene, walks, shops, great places to eat, and a variety of sandy beaches which are ideal for swimming, surfing and seal-spotting.  ‘We’re not surprised that St Ives is a hit with readers’ said deputy editor and Coast Award organiser Alex Reece. ‘For a small town, it offers such  variety - from bucket-an-space holidays to high culture’.

The Porthminster Cafe scooped the Best Coastal Cafe, Pub or Restaurant category, with judges enamoured by the high standard of service and culinary excellence.  What clinched this year’s Award is the Cafe’s concern for sustainability and the new fish and chip shop which enables the business to cater for a range of tastes and pockets.

The Town Mayor, Yvonne Watson, attended the Coast Award prize ceremony in London and said that she was thrilled to accept the award on behalf of the town.  A prizewinners lunch was hosted by the Porthminster Cafe where the Cafe owners and the Mayor were joined by fellow Cornish winners Surfers Against Sewage who excelled in the category, Best Marine Green Project for their Mermaid’s Tears campaign.

The Coast Awards, launched in 2008 were established to recognise the people and places that represent all that is innovative, valuable and exciting around the British coastline.  Public votes are cast from every part of the UK, to inform the decision of the expert judging panel, including Countryfile’s Julia Bradbury, chef Galton Balckiston, chief executive of the Ramblers Tom Franklin, Coast editor Clare Gogerty and Tom Joule, MD of Joules Clothing.
