‘ENCOURAGING RESPONSE’ TO ST IVES HARBOUR FLAG SCHEME

‘Well pleased’ was the response from St Ives Town Councillor Ron Tulley (2nd left) when he along with fellow Councillors Colin Sanger, Bill Fry and Norman Laity manned a ‘drop-in’ information session on Friday 8 April outside the Shore Shelter on Wharf Road to gauge response from local business to the idea of erecting flags around the harbour which would not only enhance and ‘lift’ the harbour but by having a unique filament within the flag aims to minimize and deter the seagulls from swooping at people and keep them more ‘ on the wing’.  On hand was a representative from the Cornish-based Big Wave Flag Company who can produce the flags.

Councillor Tulley one of the councillors spearheading the project which it is hoped will be up and in situ before the main holiday season gets underway said ‘the small number of demo flags we had up on Friday gave us all some very feedback both from business people and visitors alike”.  The scheme is in some respects a trial period of up to three years to see if the flags do actually deter the gulls.

Anyone not already contacted by the Town Council but keen to find out more about this unique sponsorship scheme should contact St Ives Town Clerk.
