IDEA AIMS TO REDUCE SEAGULL NUISANCE

In ongoing efforts to keep the nuisance problem caused by gulls especially around the harbour area of St Ives to a minimum, St Ives Town Council have been investigating the installation of large colourful flags from West Pier to Smeatons Pier during the summer.  This initiative has come from observing how the fluttering of the large flags erected around a large part of the harbour area during the September Festival last year proved effective in keeping the gulls ‘on the wing’.  In January, Town Councillors Ron Tulley, Bill Fry and Colin Sanger along with Council Administrative Assistant Jeremy Ward (3rd left) met up with Andrew Kingsley-Tubbs (2nd left) of Big Wave Flags of Perranporth who demonstrated the type of size and design of flags that could be situ if the idea is approved and adopted by the Town Council in March.

St Ives Harbour Master, Stephen Bassett (1st left) said “Any deterrent which aims to reduce the nuisance of the gulls to our visitors and locals alike is welcome and the flags will certainly ‘lift’ and give an added visitor experience to St Ives Harbour”.  The Councils current programme of large sign boards warning of the dangers of eating outdoors will continue.
