Gone in 60 minutes in the fourth of its twice yearly ‘Free for All’, - an event in which local people can dispose of items of anything they no longer find a use for and at the same time finding something they do; St Ives Town Council in conjunction with the Cornwall Council Recycling Unit found once again at the Guildhall on Saturday 8 October it proved just as popular as ever with around 100 people queuing from 9.00am eager for the doors to open sharp at 10.00am. Mayor Ron Tulley along with other Town Councillors stood by as within just over thirty minutes the hall was virtually cleared of everything ranging from clothing, books, surf boards, items of furniture, books, toys and even a piano.
The event now organized in March and October each year first caught the locals public imagination in March 2010. Commenting after tables were being put away and the last of surplus items bagged up ready for the next event in March 2012 Councillor Tulley said “It is amazing how much local people look forward to this now, rather that take their unwanted items to land fill, it is gratifying to see so many have found something of need. As soon as we can confirm a firm date for the next one we will certainly let people know”.
