FREE FOR ALL - Saturday 6 March 2010

St Ives Town Council who teamed up with Cornwall Council’s waste and recycling team were delighted with the success of the first “Free for All” event at the Guildhall in St Ives on Saturday 6th March.

The aim of this unique event was to encourage as many people as possible to re-use and recycle instead of sending more items to landfill.  Residents and Businesses had the opportunity to bring along unwanted household goods or pick up anything they wanted or needed from the items donated.  The events was opened to all whether they were bringing items to give away or searching for something particular.  All of the items on offer were absolutely free.

Councillor Julian German cabinet member for the Environment at Cornwall Council, said “We know this kind of event has worked in other parts of the country but this is the first time we have been involved in one in Cornwall.  Hats off to the St Ives Town Council for pushing the idea forward.  We really hope that now one event has been so successful other communities may think about having one themselves”.

The Waste Awareness Team will be producing a new template to help communities organise local Free for All’s.
