There was hectic activity at the Guildhall on Saturday 5 March when St Ives Town Council joined up with Cornwall Council’s recycling team for the third in its now twice yearly ‘Free for All’ events. The events in March and October are now a regular fixture in the St Ives calendar.
The idea behind the events is very simple - those who have anything that they no longer want bring it down to the Guildhall and people then come and help themselves to the items. Those in the know anticipating some real bargain give-aways began queuing outside the Guildhall two hours before the event start time of 10.00am, with the queue stretching nearly into Tregenna Place. After a brief opening speech by the Mayor, Councillor Yvonne Watson, people rushed into the hall bags and trolleys at the ready and were greeted with four long rows of tables stacked high with a huge selection of goods including furniture, books, toys, clothes, crockery and cutlery, glasses and ornaments and a bicycle. There were some smiling faces as people left clutching their new possessions and by around 11.00am it was nearly all over. St Ives Town Councillor Ron Tulley commented: “The previous two events were very successful, but Saturday’s event was the best so far, with more goods, more people and very little left over at the end”>
The next Free For All event will be held in the Guildhall on Saturday 1st October.
