A wedding dress, bicycle, single bed and commode were just a handful of diverse items - all free - up for grabs at St Ives Guildhall on Saturday when the Town Council teamed up with Cornwall Council’s recycling team to hold a Free for All event. The idea behind the event was very simple - those who had anything that they no longer wanted could bring it down to the Guildhall and people could then come and help themselves.
Anticipating some real bargains, people began queuing well before the opening time of 10am and they were not to be disappointed - the cavernous Concert Hall was packed with a huge variety of items.
There were many smiling faces as people left clutching their new possessions - children who were delighted with their new toys and those setting up home who managed to acquire some basic furniture and kitchen equipment to get them started. St Ives Town Councillor Ron Tulley commented: “The event was very successful. It is a way of recycling items that is good for everyone - people can have a clearout and let others make use of the items”. Encouraged by the success of the event, the Town Council is not planning to hold similar events on a regular basis every March and October.
