MAYOR GIVES REASSURANCE ABOUT SHARK SIGHTINGS

In response to reports in the national and international press regarding sightings of an oceanic whitetip shark off the coast of Cornwall, the Mayor of St Ives, Councillor Ron Tulley has given reassurances that the shark poses no danger to swimmers and suggest that the sightings should be taken as an indication of the wide variety of sealife in the area, encouraging people to visit St Ives to make the most of the abundance of wildlife in the sea and around the coast and inland areas.

Oceanic whitetips are usually found in the open sea in tropical waters and there have been no confirmed sighting in British waters and so it is likely that this sighting has been reported in error.

In the town itself, there has been interest in the story, but no real concern, with local residents and holiday makers continuing to enjoy the beautiful beaches and coastal walks that St Ives offers.
