Meet St Ives man Alan Cooper with just one thing on his mind ‘traffic’. St Ives Town Council has been working with the police and has become the first local council in Cornwall to appoint its own Traffic Control Officer. The need was identified in response to the difficulties experienced each summer with the increase in motorists trying to navigate the roads around the town centre. The Town Council have already taken steps to help day visitors to St Ives to reach the town via the old coach road to reduce traffic impact to Lelant and Carbis Bay. Alan who started on Monday 2nd August will now build on this to help guide visitors to the car parking available, avoiding the town centre streets. It is intended that visitors will be able to enjoy St Ives without being stuck in jams and that by diverting cars from the town centre, those with a need to access businesses etc. in the town will be able to do so more easily. St Ives Town Clerk, Louise Dowe said “This is a pilot scheme for this year and is planned to continue until the end of September 2010”. The Traffic Control Officer will be located at key locations around the town from Monday to Saturday from 10am to 2pm. Mayor of St Ives, Councillor Yvonne Watson said “I am delighted to welcome Alan as a member of the Council Staff and I am sure his presence will help to alleviate some of the traffic problems we get on a daily basis here in the town over the summer months”.
